It is 100 years since Madge Stevens was born - Pt 19

Personal Memory; from Margaret Keech (nee Woolley)
After Nana passed away, (20 Mar 1967) when I was about 13 years old, Aunt Madge, and sometimes Gran would continue to come for visits, and likewise, we would go out West. I also recall lots of time spent with our (second) cousins, with all of them congregating at Aunt Madge's when we were there. One time, we stayed at David's house while they were away on vacation, and lucky me, being the youngest, got to sleep in young David's crib! (I think I was about 10 years old at the time!!!). It was great fun to have 'out West' cousins to play with, but unfortunately, over the years, especially once Aunt Madge moved to New Zealand, our contact with them diminished. Your grandmother was such a fun loving woman - as Mom and I recalled, she often would say "Aren't we having fun?"!! She was a wonderful cook, whipping up a batch of fudge, yet if you asked her for the recipe, it was always just in her head, and she never measured anything out.

One time, when Aunt Madge was visiting us when we lived in St. Marys, there was a farm field a block away that was never sold into building lots. Along the end of the field was what Aunt Madge thought was a patch of rhubarb, probably left over from the old farm house. She quite excitedly went back home, got a knife, cut off some stalks of rhubarb, wnet back to our house and proceeded to make a pie for dessert. We eagerly aniticpated dessert that night, but with the first bite, realized Aunt Madge had not found rhubarb, but burdock - a very rubbery weed!!! We had lots of laughs about that for many years!!! 1967 Songs; we were still under the influence of the ‘swinging sixties’ with the British influence on music trends waning a little and the American ‘flower power’ trends taking hold.
