It is 100 years since Madge Stevens was born - Pt 21


Three sisters and their old school teacher, along with Henry Senft and Little Grama (two m's or one?)

March 1974, 1st grandchild, Barbara and her husband Ray come to stay. Initially at Madge’s sister Ena’s place in South Burnaby, Vancouver (in Phyllis’s place downstairs at Ena & Henry’s place) while Phyllis was away. After heading off to Kamloops and then meeting up again in Calgary to ‘Farm sit’ at Heather & Nelson’s farm in High River, Alberta, with Shauna, Jill, David and John. Whilst on the farm, Madge takes Barbara and Ray up to Edmonton to visit Betty and attend Betty & Bill Whaley’s daughter, Wanda’s wedding to Wayne Wispinski, July 1974. After Heather and Nelson return from Scotland, Barbara and Ray return with Madge to stay in her converted Garage with mother Roselie Humphrey (Little Gramma). Returning to New Zealand in November 1974.



This house has since been replaced by a new building in Pearl Avenue

03 Aug 1974, 8th grandchild, Judy Patterson marries Fred Jagert in Calgary. Madge and her mother Roselie Humphrey attend along with 1st grandchild Barbara and husband Ray, visiting from N.Z.

1974 Songs; I Can Help, I Honestly Love You, Kung Fu Fighting, Seasons In The Sun, The Streak, The Way We Were. Swedish group Abba break through to world attention, The Hues Corporation “Rock The Boat” and George McCrae’s “Rock Your Baby” lay the foundation for a new beat, quickly dubbed ‘disco’.
Events; Patti Hearst is abducted by Symbionese Liberation Army and is later seen helping her captors rob a bank, Streaking – running naked for a few moments in a public place - becomes a fad, leading Soviet ballet dancer, Mikahil Baryshnikov defects to the West, President Nixon resigns, Muhammad Ali knocks out George Forman and regains his heavyweight title, the use of telephone answering machines becomes popular.
